Over six million fled war-torn Ukraine: refugee crisis now bigger than Syrian one

Brussels, 12 May 2022 – Since the first day of Russian invasion over six million people left Ukraine. The majority of them went to Poland followed by Romania, Hungary, Russia.

A small percentage headed to central Europe: in the first two months of Russia’s aggression 390,000 Ukrainians reached Germany, over 120.000 entered Italy, 70,000 went to France, only 27,100 entered UK under the country’s tough immigration laws.

UNHCR figures show the main flow of people fleeing the war tend to remain in the neighbouring countries planning to get back home.

UNHCR chart shows the main wave of refugees left Ukraine over the first month of Russian invasion. Then halved in April
